The New Moon, when the Sun and Moon meet and form a conjunction in the exact same degree, signals the beginning of our Lunar Cycle. This significant lunation occurs roughly every twenty-eight days, offering us an opportunity to focus our awareness inward, to reflect and to plant proverbial seeds for the coming months. What is it, we ask ourselves, that we’d like to call in? What habits and actions can best support us in realizing our aspirations and dreams? The two days surrounding the New Moon provide a supportive atmosphere for meditation, detailing our intentions in clear, detailed language, creating a mood board and for formulating next right steps in service to their manifestation.
During the Waxing Crescent Moon, we experience the first visible stage of the Lunar Cycle. This is a moment of attraction, in bringing in people, circumstances and opportunities that can aid whatever intentions we set during the New Moon. A hopeful, anticipatory feeling is often present during this phase. We sense the possibility of what’s to come. A wise time to jot down any bits of information or conversations that feel significant, to track our progress, and to log any shifts in relationship to our intentions.
One week after the New Moon, we reach the First Quarter Moon phase, when the Sun and Moon form a ninety degree angle. This friction provides us with the necessary grit to put our New Moon intentions to work. The days surrounding the First Quarter Moon are ripe for putting plans into motion. Here, we firm up decisions and take on new challenges in service to our own growth and self-actualization. An excellent time, for example, to make the call, send the email, schedule the appointment that will catalyze our plans. Spirit, as the saying goes, meets us at the point of action.
Just before the Full Moon, the Waxing Gibbous Moon phase brings further clarification to our plans. This is a period of adjustment, and re-prioritization. We’re metabolizing and incorporating any shifts or changes that have occurred in the last few days into our consciousness. The overall atmosphere is one of discovery and refinement. A good time to cleanse our space, take a walk and recharge our energy.
Two weeks after the New Moon, the sky is illuminated by the Full Moon, when the Sun and Moon form an opposition, 180 degrees apart. Full Moons offer us moments of illumination and culmination. We may feel quite emotional under a sky like this. Such emotionality or intensity of feeling actually can facilitate the release of negative energy. And in moving said stagnancy, we open pathways for growth and expansion. The few days surrounding the Full Moon are thus excellent for journaling, free form writing, dream work and body work. We suggest writing what we wish to let go of and then safely burning or shredding the paper. This ritual offers both healing and renewal during these potent days. If we collect stones or crystals, this is also the time to charge them, ideally directly under the moonlight, either through a window or on the earth.
During this period of the Lunar Cycle, as the moon begins to fade from fullness, we continue to release whatever emotions and awareness arose during the Full Moon. Here we liberate ourselves from unwanted patterning, recognizing our self-imposed and self-created limitations, thus making way for new learnings, habits and behaviors. A good time for spending time on and with our intentions and/or mood board and for journaling, as well as for reading and reflecting.
A week prior to the next New Moon, we experience the Last Quarter Moon. This fated and serendipitous lunar phase is a window into the Universe’s cosmic guidance. During these days, we loosen our grip further, allowing for necessary interference. This is a perfect time for reflection, of pondering the liminal space between what we’ve surrendered and what we’re calling in. A wonderful time to connect to the great beyond, and to our place within its vast and intimate unfolding and, with that, to cut any energetic cords and clean out clutter.
This final phase of the Lunar Cycle is one for simplicity, for luxuriating in silence as the sky fades from view into the darkness of the New Moon. Here, we reflect upon the past month, move deeper into ourselves and find acceptance, peace and presence. This is an ideal for meditation, and soaking up the natural world.
